MPLS Use Case Scenario

Scenario 1: Measure the Impact of an MPLS Rollout
A network engineer was gradually moving portions of the network to MPLS to support a VoIP deployment. The company’s traditional hub and spoke network included very large and expensive links that cost $15,000 per month. By moving the entire network to MPLS, the company could save thousands of dollars each year, but they wanted to ensure performance would not suffer.

Before the Move to MPLS…
Prior to embarking on the migration to MPLS, the engineer first examined network latency and interface utilization for the Tokyo site that would be affected by the move to MPLS.

1) The NetQoS Performance Center showed that the Tokyo site was already the worst-performing network segment, and that two of the New York datacenter WAN interfaces to Tokyo were experiencing high utilization.

2) An Interface Utilization Trend view showed consistently high utilization on those interfaces in the datacenter before the move to MPLS.

3) The NetQoS Performance Center also showed that the top protocol before moving to MPLS was a Voice protocol.


After the Move to MPLS…
Once the MPLS migration was complete, the engineer wanted to evaluate the performance impact.

1) The NetQoS Performance Center now showed that the Tokyo site was no longer in the list of worst-performing networks, and that interface utilization for the New York datacenter WAN interfaces to Tokyo had dropped significantly.

2) The impact of the move to MPLS can clearly be seen in the NetQoS Performance Center Utilization Trend view. At approximately 19:00, when the MPLS migration took place, the traffic utilization dropped significantly.

3) The same can be seen from the traffic perspective, where the move to MPLS appears to have minimized the amount of Voice traffic being routed to the New York datacenter.


Resolution:
Based on information provided by the NetQoS Performance Center, the engineer decided to roll out MPLS enterprise-wide, saving $7,000 per link, per month—the cost difference between the traditional links and the MPLS circuits.
